For one December weekend, Galveston’s historic downtown takes on a distinctly Victorian personality. Top hats replace baseball caps, carolers wander between ornate 19th-century buildings, and characters inspired by another era mingle with visitors in the streets. Dickens on The Strand returns December 4 – 6, 2026, marking the 53rd year of this Galveston Christmas tradition.
Presented by the Galveston Historical Foundation, the festival draws inspiration from Victorian London and the world of Charles Dickens. Galveston’s preserved architecture provides a fitting backdrop, making this much more than a typical holiday market. For a few days, an already historic neighborhood becomes part of the experience.
STEP INTO ANOTHER CENTURY
Part of what makes Dickens on The Strand so much fun is simply walking through it. Costumed characters roam the district while musicians, entertainers, and performers keep something happening throughout the day. The 2026 festival is scheduled to feature parades, entertainment across four stages, vendors, family activities, and roaming characters.
Visitors are welcome to get into character, too. Victorian-inspired clothing isn’t required, but dressing for the occasion adds another layer of fun and the Galveston Historical Foundation is offering half-price gate admission for guests wearing Victorian costumes in 2026.
SHOP, SNACK AND WANDER THE STRAND
Save some time to browse instead of trying to follow a strict schedule. Vendors dressed for the period sell their goods from decorated stalls and carts throughout the festival. Expect a mixture of holiday food and drinks, crafts, clothing, jewelry, seasonal decorations, and gifts.
Between shopping stops, watch a parade, listen to live music, catch one of the stage performances, or simply enjoy the people-watching. You may encounter carolers, musicians, jugglers, bagpipers, and other performers as you make your way through the historic district.
MAKE THE WEEKEND A LITTLE MORE DICKENS
Visitors who want more than the main street festival can add one of several special experiences to their weekend. The 2026 schedule includes Jubilation Ringers Handbell Concerts at the 1859 St. Joseph’s Church, Mrs. Tickit’s English Breakfast at Ashton Villa, Miss Havisham’s Afternoon Tea at Bishop’s Palace, Elevenses on the Pier at the Galveston Historic Seaport, and Saint Arnold’s Walking Tours. These experiences require separate tickets.
Friday night also offers an easy way to get an early start on the weekend. Fezziwig’s Friday runs from 5 – 9 p.m. on December 4 and offers free festival admission. Paid general admission applies Saturday and Sunday.
